Lei niho palaoa is a necklace that is deeply rooted in Hawaiian history and culture. Traditionally niho palaoa was worn by aliʻi (chiefs) of both genders to signify their high rank and connection to their ancestors.
A lei niho palaoa is finely crafted. The pendant was usually made out of sperm whale tooth (palaoa) or walrus ivory. The shape of the hook can be interpreted as a stylized tongue, representing mana (spiritual power) or connection. The cord that the pendant is suspended from is orginally made from thousands of strands of finely braided human hair. Hair that was used was often from the wearer of the necklace family or ancestors. Emphasizing the connection to lineage and ancestry.
